OO Progress
Published May 24th, 2005 in ProgressThere’s been quite a few hints recently on the PEG that some form of OO is coming in the next ( 10.1 ) release. This morning this message put a little more meat on the bones. There’s obviously a while to go yet until we see whether this is what actually gets delivered and what the limitations will be – will you be able to pass an instance over the appserver boundary? – but still, it looks seriously promising.
It’s actually starting to get me excited about the 4GL all over again. When I started with Progress ( v5 ), the 4GL was streets ahead of anything else for developing business applications. It caught my attention and got me excited, as a developer about using it. That enthusiasm has waned slightly over the years since, but when you start to combine proDataSets, supers, pub-sub and now what looks like a decent stab at OO the future starts to look really bright again for the 4GL.
I have to agree. The stuff that development is doing is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait for beta 1.
